A brilliant purva paksha and Uttara paksha on Western Indology. Rajiv Malhotra is one of the most gifted and brilliant writers. His simple, concise and no-nonsense writing style makes a really complicated subject easy to understand and appreciate. He is like Richard Feynman of Indian Philosophy. One of the best things I like about the books are these frameworks which help you to think better on the subject. In his previouse works, he provided the concepts of Intellectual Kurukshetra, digestion, porcupine defense e.t.c. These help you to understand the problem more clearly. This book is no exception. He effectively uses the concept of insider vs outsider, prescriptive vs descriptive writings, sacred philology.
The goal of this book is to provide tools to understand the complex state of Asian Studies. Couple of years back when I read some of the discussions in RISA forums, I was shocked to see how biased some of the prominent academicians of Asian Studies are (Search for RISA LILA ). This book provides a good framework to understand the motivations and mechanisms of western Indology (a.k.a Asian studies)
There are some brilliant reviews about this book (again..search for "The battle for Sanskrit" review) and lot of talks by the author himself in youtube. So, I am not giving detailed description of contents of the book.
This book really helped me in understanding works of Sheldon Pollock. I tried to read his papers couple of time. But his complicated sentence formations along with vague description of things makes it really complicated (especially his paper about liberation philology). After reading this book, I was able to understand his writings and motivations. Now I can clearly see how his communistic upbrining influenced his writings and influeincing many of his students.
In conclusion this is a book which must be read and then keep with you as a reference.

The veil has been lifted from 1000 years of Hindu Tamas. "free at last, free at last, thank god almighty we are free at last"
I recommend this book for anyone who is interested. It does a detailed explanation of some of the false and unchallenged claims by Western Indologists. It proposes a new form of Indology, sacred Indology. The book really hits on the major reason Hindus lost their hold on their own religious narrative. It has to do with the decline of the purva-paksha tradition. A study of the other their culture, religion, and society. In chapter 11, specifically pages 364 and 368 to 371, Rajiv Malhotra explains the seven hindrances/excuses that some Hindus use as to why they don't do purva-paksha. Excellent Read.
Strongly recommended. Sanskrit is embedded in the DNA of Bharat's sanskriti. It was a Pleasure reading the book as each word resonated deep inside. It was always a mystery to understand why so many Misinformed/Misguided students fall trap to vested interests who want world domination. After reading the book there is better understanding about the self serving individuals who overlook the damage there actions will do in long run and potentiate guilt they may feel whenever they want to do course correction.
Purva paksha, Uttara paksha is beautifully explained. Uttar Paksha without doing a Purva paksha will usually be reactive emotional outburst(akin to responding without critically examining the 'matah' of opponents just to make an attempt to play to the galleries to score brownie points and in reality becoming in-effective). Purva paksha without any Uttara paksha will be escapism and waste of time (akin to paralysis due to too much analysis without any action and missing the golden opportunity to refute/challenge the opponent's point of view)
Rajiv's tapasya on this subject is evident from his clear explanation of the outsiders and insiders (division is not based on race, ethnicity, or nationality). Intellectual Kshatriyas will take it to next level to contribute towards awakening and ensure that insiders get the Adhikaras they deserve
Sheldon Pollock in his book The Language of the Gods in the World of Men Sanskrit, Culture, and Power in Premodern India not only makes a few claims, but builds ideas around them. This book poses challenges to that. This is unique among Mr. Malhotra's books in that he is specifically inviting Prof. Pollock for a dual. To be frank I do not think Indian history is what Hindu Fundamentalists like Rajiv Malhotra claims it to be, but it would be wrong to blindly believe Sheldon Pollock as well. Indology had become an incesteous field with scholars from the same school of thought quoting each other and fiercely guarding their turf. That process is changing now. Fact claims are being tested and retested and we will end up with better versions of the past as this process goes on upon which to build a better present. It is too much to expect a scholar void of passion disinterested in truth. Instead we have The leftist and rightist intellects churning the Mount Meru in this celestial ocean. Whatever comes out of it will be the history of India that emerges controlled by no one, but owned by everyone. This time I home there is no Vishnu to cheat the asuras of their fair share.
Suddenly Indian history has become interesting. The rivalry makes it fascinating. The check and balance system that makes America is coming into play. One institution checks the errors of the others and between the two of them, truth wins out. Indian history has taken on an American color. Jewish American Sheldon Pollock and Indian American Rajiv Malhotra are churning the ocean of Indian history from opposite ends. What great times we live. May all the Gods protect their lives! They make invaluable contributions.
