An excellent, well written and nostalgic book! I grew up in the 1950s, in post war Greece and I purchased this book out of curiosity, wishing to know how kids of my age grew up in post war Britain.To my great surprise, many aspects of everyday life were just the same ! Cold houses and cold rooms in wintertime,tin baths, outside toilets(in rural areas), neatly cut squares of newspaper instead of toilet paper...Car ownership was still very low, so streets were generally traffic-free and you could see knife-sharpeners with a grinder on the front of their pushbikes ,or an ice cream man on his three-wheeled bike with the box at the front filled with small blocks of ice cream...The familiar sound of ticking clocks, or of a sewing machine around the house...Few people had telephones. A radiogram would be considered a real status symbol. On the other hand, people were trusting and they frequently left the door key hanging behind the letterbox. Everyone knew their neighbours and there was little evidence of jealousy or desire for luxuries.

Very enjoyable read, brought back lots of happy memories.
Remember a lot of this even though I lived in Australia. Well written and interesting.
Easy reading - relaxing. The book brings back happy and less happy memories of course. Well written. Really enjoyed it!
